The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Tuesday came under heavy opposition fire for the alleged reduction in "Hindu holidays", proposed for government schools across the state for next year, 2024. Alleging that it is an assault on Hindu sentiment, the Bharatiya Janata Party demanded immediate withdrawal of the proposed calendar.
The education department, however, stated that the confusion has arisen because of two notifications it brought out on Monday, which pertained to separate holiday calendars for Hindi and Urdu medium schools. The department made it clear that the total number of holidays proposed for 2024 was 60, the same as the preceding years, which was in accordance with the Right To Education (RTE) Act that postulates a minimum of 220 working days at schools.
The department also clarified that neither calendar mentioned the birth anniversaries of Emperor Asoka, Lord Mahavira and Ver Kunwar Singh in 2024 since these fell during the summer vacation. It also said that the summer vacations were taking place from April 15 to May 15, earlier than usual, in view of the Lok Sabha polls.
