Polling for 117 Assembly seats in Punjab began on Sunday morning amid tight security arrangements. Voting started at 8 am and will continue till 6 pm. A total of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders, are in the fray for the high-stake electoral contest. There are 2,14,99,804 voters, including 1,02,00,996 women. Punjab is witnessing a multi-cornered contest among the Congress, AAP, SAD-BSP, BJP-PLC-SAD (Sanyukt) and the Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, a political front of various farmer bodies. The Shiromani Akali Dal is contesting the polls in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The BJP is fighting the elections in alliance with Amarinder Singh-led Punjab Lok Congress and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led SAD (Sanyukt). The SSM is contesting the polls with Haryana Bharatiya Kisan Union (Chaduni) leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni-led Sanyukt Sangharsh Party. Prominent faces in the fray include Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Aam Aadmi Party's chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, former CMs Amarinder Singh and Parkash Singh Badal, and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. Former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Punjab BJP chief Ashwani Sharma and former Union minister Vijay Sampla are also in the fray.

PM Modi recalls Ahmedabad blasts, says some parties sympathetic to such terrorists
Targeting rival parties at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the Ahmedabad bomb blasts and said some parties are sympathetic to such terrorists and accused the erstwhile Samajwadi Party government of seeking withdrawal of cases against those involved in terror attacks in the state. Addressing the BJP rally in Hardoi, PM Modi said the people here have seen how the Samajwadi Party when in government gave a free hand to those using 'katta' (countrymade pistols) and its cadres. Police impound actor Sonu Sood’s vehicle
Punjab police have instructed actor Sonu Sood to stay at home impounding his vehicle following complaints from Shiromani Akali Dal. SAD alleged that he was visiting polling booths in Moga, where his sister is a Congress candidate, and trying to influence voters.
UP sees 36% voter turnout till 1 pm
Voter turnout in Uttar Pradesh stood at 35.88 percent at 1 pm. The voting is part of the third phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, in 59 assembly seats.
Punjab registers over 34 percent voter turnout till 1 pm
A voter turnout of 34.10 percent was recorded till 1 pm in Punjab, where the polling is underway for all 117 Assembly seats amid tight security arrangements. A total of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders, are in the fray for the highstake electoral contest.
