Mumbai Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against
Sajjan Jindal, the Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Group, which accuses him of rape.
The complaint, filed at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex Police Station, has been made by a 30 year old
Mumbai-based doctor, and alleges that the incident occurred on January 24, 2022 at a penthouse in Jindal’s offices in BKC.
Mumbai Police has booked Sajjan Jindal under
IPC 376 (rape), IPC 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and IPC 503 (criminal intimidation).
The complainant's statement in the FIR, accessed by CNBC-TV18, alleges she met Sajjan Jindal for the first time on October 8, 2021 in
Dubai, where phone numbers were exchanged with the intent of pursuing property-related deals.
She further alleges that after a few meetings, the accused tried to make sexual advances towards her on more than one occasion, which she repeatedly refused.
She claims several such meetings took place between her and Jindal between October 2021 and January 2022, spanning different locations and cities.
However, the complainant alleges that on January 24, 2022, when she arrived at the penthouse of a building in BKC which houses Jindal’s offices, he raped her.
The FIR says that the complainant first approached the police with her complaint on February 16, 2023. It further states that at that point, she was approached by people purportedly representing Jindal who allegedly urged her to settle the matter and withdraw her complaint.
The complainant told CNBC-TV18, "I approached the police on February 16, 2023. They barely scribbled down a rough statement. They didn't even give me a copy of that statement. No FIR was filed... Finally, on December 5, 2023, I filed a writ petition against the police in Bombay High Court."
The FIR was registered on December 13, 2023, a day after the police were ordered to do so by the court.
Mumbai Police, however, deny any delay in registering the FIR. DCP Deekshitkumar Gedam told CNBC-TV18, "Mumbai Police is doing everything legally as per procedure. There wasn't any delay from our side in filing of the FIR. We take matters related to women safety very seriously. We are following the legal course of action in the matter."
CNBC-TV18 learns that the police have not summoned Sajjan Jindal for questioning as yet.
CNBC-TV18 has reached out to JSW Group regarding these allegations and developments. A response is awaited. This story will be updated when such a response is received, or as further developments take place.
