India is likely to get its first woman chief justice in 2027 if the government clears the present list of recommended names by the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation to the apex court. The SC Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana has recommended the names of nine judges from different high courts for their appointment to the apex court. Justice B.V. Nagarathna of Karnataka High Court is one among the three women judges in the list, according to the Bar and Bench.
If elevated to the Supreme Court, Justice Nagarathna will be in line to become the CJI in 2027. However, she will head the apex court only for a month.
The three women judges who have been recommended include Chief Justice of Telangana High Court Justice Hima Kohli, Gujarat High Court Judge, Justice Bela Trivedi, and Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice B.V. Nagarathna.
