Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a jeep safari inside the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam. On his maiden visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Prime Minister first took the elephant safari in the Mihimukh area of the park's Central Kohora Range. Later, he took a jeep safari inside the same range, PTI reported.

The director of the park, Sonali Ghosh, and other senior forest officials accompanied the Prime Minister during his visit.

The Kaziranga National Park is famous for one-horned rhinoceros, while elephants, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and tigers are also found there.

PM Modi arrived at Kaziranga on Friday evening. Later in the day, he is scheduled to unveil an 84-foot statue of Lachit Borphukan, who was the General of the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam. The event will take place in Jorhat.

This project also includes the construction of the Lachit and Tai-Ahom Museum and an auditorium with a total seating capacity of 500 people.

It is an effort to celebrate the valour of Borphukan and spread awareness about him among the youth.

After that, Prime Minister Modi will proceed to Meleng Meteli Pothar, also in Assam's Jorhat district, where he will inaugurate, dedicate to the nation, and lay the foundation stone of multiple developmental projects worth around ₹17,500 crore to strengthen key sectors like health, oil and gas, rail and housing.

PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE) scheme, read a statement.

These include a Medical College and Hospital at Sivasagar and a Hemato-Lymphoid Centre in Guwahati.

He will also lay the foundation stone of a few important projects in the oil and gas sector including capacity expansion of Digboi Refinery from 0.65 to 1 MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum); Guwahati Refinery Expansion (1.0 to 1.2 MMTPA) along with installation of Catalytic Reforming Unit (CRU); and augmentation of Facilities at Betkutchi (Guwahati) Terminal: Indian Oil Corporation Limited, among others, the statement added.

Besides them, the Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation the new Medical College and Hospital at Tinsukia and a 718-km-long Barauni-Guwahati Pipeline (part of Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Project) built at a cost of about ₹3,992 crore.

In a major boost to the housing sector in the state, PM Modi will inaugurate close to 5.5 lakh homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). These houses have been constructed at a cost of around ₹8,450 crore.
