Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Union Cabinet is expected to approve the development of two more
Delhi Metro corridors on Wednesday. These include the 'Lajpat Nagar to G Block in Saket' and 'Inderlok to Indraprastha'.
The aggregate length of the two stretches of
Delhi Metro will be around 20 km, according to a Times of India report. Details of the cost of these two stretches under the DMRC Phase-IV are still unknown.
There will be eight stations in the 8-km-long Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor, while the 12-km Inderlok-Indraprastha line will have 10 stations in total.
A source told the national daily that these two lines are expected to bring down the travel time. The passengers will no longer have to take long detours to reach their specific destinations.
The two lines will connect the busy commercial areas in the national capital. The D
elhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will go ahead with the bidding process once approval is received from the Union Cabinet.
“There is a greater need to connect more parts of
Delhi with Metro to deal with increasing congestion,” the source said.
To curb pollution and ease traffic congestion in the Delhi-NCR region, the central government is expediting the two corridors, officials said.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 112 National Highway projects spread across the country worth around ₹1 lakh crore in Gurugram.
While reiterating his government's holistic vision for infrastructure development in the region, PM Modi said that these projects, along with the expansion of metro lines and the construction of international airports, are aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing pollution.
“The 21st century India is India of big vision and big goals,“ he asserted.
Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approved the signing of a MoU between the Delhi government, the Centre and the DMRC on the first three corridors being built under Phase-IV of the
Delhi Metro.
According to an official statement, DMRC is currently carrying out construction work on a 65.2-km stretch of three priority corridors spanning 45 stations as part of the Phase-IV project.
Among these corridors are Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg (28.92 km), Majlis Park-Maujpur (12.55 km) -- both extensions of the Magenta Line and Pink Line -- and Aerocity-Tughlakabad (23.62 km) -- being constructed as 'Golden Line' to connect the Violet Line and the Airport Line.
