The Election Commission last week announced that the
2024 general elections will be conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.
Gujarat, widely recognised as a stronghold of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has 26 parliamentary constituencies. The state will go to polls in a single phase on May 7.
It’s the home state of
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and is poised to play a key role in determining the outcome of elections for the Lower House of the Parliament.
During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP registered a massive victory across all 26 seats in the state, securing a 62.21% vote share, while the Congress party could only manage 32.11%. The BJP secured a clean sweep in the state during the 2014 polls as well.
The BJP is once again aiming to retain all 26
Lok Sabha seats in the state, while the Congress is contesting the elections in alliance with the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's enduring influence -- often considered a trump card for the BJP in Gujarat -- remains a significant factor in the state this time. PM Modi has served as the chief minister of Gujarat for over a decade.
On the other side, the Opposition parties will be striving to reclaim their footing in the state in the 2024 elections.
