At least one person was killed and a few others sustained injuries after a significant portion of a boundary wall at the Gokulpuri
Metro Station in Delhi collapsed on Thursday. According to the Delhi Fire Service department, one person, who was trapped under the debris, was rushed to the GTB Hospital for immediate medical attention, reported India TV.
According to The Indian Express, 53-year-old Vinod Kumar, a resident of Karawal Nagar, died in the incident.
Meanwhile, the
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a compensation of ₹15 lakh to the family of the victim. As per the official statement, the corporation has also announced ₹2.5 lakh for the grievously injured and ₹50,000 for those who have minor injuries.
As per the Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast), Joy Tirkey, the incident occurred at around 11 am on Thursday, causing severe injury to one person and minor injuries to a few others.
DCP Tirkey also mentioned that the police personnel, along with the help of the public, managed to get the victim out of the debris. Atul Garg, the Chief of Delhi Fire Services, stated that following the report of the incident at 11 am, four fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
He said that two of the injured people were rescued by the department personnel while the rest were already rescued by the public, reported Indian Express.
The efforts to clear the debris are underway. DCP Tirkey said, “Debris is being removed with the help of JCBs and cranes," reported ANI.
Further investigation is underway while a case under relevant sections will also be filed, DCP Tirkey said.
The Gokulpuri Metro Station falls on the Pink Line of the
Delhi Metro. It stretches from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar and serves as a crucial transport hub connecting various parts of the national capital. After the incident, the metro station was shut.
