In a remarkable display of international unity and empathy, a joint statement was issued on Sunday (September 10) by prominent global leaders following the catastrophic earthquake that struck Morocco on September 9.
The statement, signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, President Azali Assoumani of the African Union and the Comoros, President Emmanuel Macron of France, World Bank President Ajay Banga, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, conveyed their unwavering solidarity with the Moroccan authorities and people during this trying time.
The leaders expressed their heartfelt condolences to the families of the earthquake's victims and emphasised their commitment to extending support to Morocco in the most effective manner possible.
Highlighting their longstanding partnership with Morocco, the statement underscored the collective dedication to assisting the Moroccan government as it has diligently worked to build a robust and inclusive economy supported by resilient institutions.
Recognising the strength of Morocco's institutions and the resilience of its people, the leaders affirmed their belief in the nation's ability to recover from the profound impact of the earthquake.
In a resounding pledge of support, the joint statement conveyed the readiness of these international partners, along with their counterparts worldwide, to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Morocco. They pledged to provide essential support for urgent short-term financial requirements and the extensive reconstruction efforts that lie ahead.
"To this end, we will mobilise our technical and financial tools and assistance in a coordinated way to help the people of Morocco overcome this terrible tragedy," the joint statement said.
The powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook Morocco late on Friday. The Interior Ministry of Morocco said late Saturday that 2,012 people were killed in the temblor. At least 2,059 people were injured, including 1,404 critically.
The US Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 when it hit at 11:11 pm, with shaking that lasted several seconds. Morocco's National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network measured it at 7 on the Richter scale. The US agency reported a magnitude 4.9 aftershock hit 19 minutes later.
