AIDS describes a collection of symptoms and infections that is caused by HIV or human immunodeficiency virus. The level of immunodeficiency or the appearance of certain infections is used to determine when the HIV infection has progressed to AIDS. Those with AIDS who do not receive treatment typically survive about 3 years.
