The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) on a PIL seeking direction to all insurance companies to extend medical insurance for treatment of mental illness.
The PIL has argued that Section 21(4) of Medical Healthcare Act clearly provides for every insurer to include mental illness in medical insurance.
However, the insurance companies are not complying with it, and there is no provision yet to extend medical insurance for treatment of mental illness, the PIL said.
The PIL further slammed insurance regulator for "bypassing responsibilities", alleging that IRDAI is not serious about providing protection to people with mental illness.
