Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced on Thursday (October 26) that a significant expansion of green hydrogen-powered buses is set to take place in Delhi by December 15, marking a substantial step towards eco-friendly public transportation in the capital city.
Speaking at the launch of India's first reference fuel, Minister Puri shared his optimism about the
green energy transition and set ambitious targets for the country's sustainable future. "The green energy transition target of 2047 is achievable, and it might be possible to reach this milestone even before the expected year," he stated, highlighting India's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing renewable energy sources.
He highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to explore and expand green energy sources across the country, promising to go public with the results of some exploration efforts in the near future.
One of the key successes noted during the event was the significant increase in domestic production of
biofuels. "We have succeeded in achieving a multiplier effect in the domestic production of biofuels, bringing us one step closer to our green energy goals," said Minister Puri.
During his address, the Union Minister elaborated on efforts to develop electrolysers without membranes, which can significantly lower the cost of renewable energy production and accelerate India's transition towards cleaner energy sources. "Electrolysers without membranes, lower cost of renewable energy are workable issues," Puri said.
One significant revelation made during the launch was the government's intention to expand the usage of
Green Hydrogen buses in the capital city. By December 15, Delhi is set to welcome a fleet of environmentally friendly public transportation options, further reducing the city's carbon footprint.
Minister Puri also hinted at the government's interest in entering the niche market of specialised fuels, signaling a broader commitment to diversified energy sources. Puri revealed that 150 kilo-litres of reference fuel could be halted, making way for cleaner energy alternatives.
He mentioned, "150 kilo-litres of reference fuel can be stopped, followed by meeting regional requirements."
Additionally, he proudly shared that India has already achieved a 12% ethanol blending in petrol. "12% ethanol blending in petrol has already been achieved," he stated.
