Bollywood rapper Badshah found himself at the centre of an investigation as he was summoned for questioning by the Maharashtra Police Cyber Cell on Monday (October 30). This development comes as part of an ongoing investigation into an online betting company app called 'FairPlay,' which has roped in some 40 celebrities, including Badshah, in its controversy.
The controversy began when Viacom 18 network filed a
First Information Report (FIR) against Badshah and a cohort of 40 other actors, among them prominent figures like actor Sanjay Dutt. The allegation suggests that these celebrities were involved in promoting the use of the FairPlay app for watching Indian Premier League (IPL) match.
Viacom 18 asserted that they held the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for streaming IPL matches, but the matches were illicitly broadcast on FairPlay. Furthermore, the media network claimed that certain actors actively endorsed the tournament on the FairPlay app, thereby contributing to the infringement of IPR.
The case at hand pertains to digital piracy, and it is anticipated that additional actors may be summoned for further investigation.
Of particular concern is the connection between the FairPlay app and the Mahadev app, which is promoted by Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal. The
Enforcement Directorate (ED) is concurrently conducting an inquiry into the Mahadev Book app on suspicions of money laundering.
A slew of celebrities, including Ranbir Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Kapil Sharma, and Shraddha Kapoor have already been called in for questioning in relation to this case.
Notably, Bollywood heavyweights such as Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, and Tiger Shroff, were allegedly present at Chandrakar's wedding in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in February this year. The nature of this connection remains under scrutiny.
