The government is considering to restrict the period for reopening of past tax assessments to four years from the current six, The Economic Times reported, adding that with this, the centre aims at creating a more taxpayer-friendly environment.
The plan, however, may exclude cases in which grave tax offences have been committed, the report said.
Citing an unnamed government official, the paper said the proposal is being discussed and a final decision will be taken closer to the July 5 Budget.
