In summer 2024, the Indian aviation industry will witness a higher number of domestic and international flights as per the Summer Schedule 2024 released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). According to the schedule released by the civil aviation regulator, there will be 24,275 domestic departures to and from 125 airports.
There is an increase of around 6% in comparison to the Summer Schedule 2023, which had 22,907 weekly departures per week from 119 airports.
Azamgarh, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Gondia, Jalgaon, Moradabad and Pithoragarh are the new airports proposed by the scheduled airlines for domestic flights.
On the other hand, international flights will see a moderate increase of 1.6%, with 1,922 scheduled weekly departures to and from 27 airports. The international schedule has been approved for flights to and from 37 countries.
India's largest airline in terms of market share and fleet size, Indigo, will have 13,050 weekly departures, 0.50% fewer flights in comparison to the previous schedule. Air India (2,278) will have fewer weekly domestic flights as compared to Vistara (2,324). SpiceJet will see a sharp dip in weekly departures, with 1,657 weekly flights, a 22% reduction in comparison to the previous summer schedule. Meanwhile, Air India Express will have 1,239 weekly departures, registering a mammoth jump of 156.52%.
Akasa, which had recently announced international flights, will also witness a 14% jump with 903 weekly flights. Other regional carriers and smaller airlines have also registered an uptick in weekly departures; the newest entrant Fly91, Zooom and IndiaOne will have 20, 6 and 112 weekly departures, respectively.
Among international weekly flights, IndiGo will have 13.5% more flights, with 731 international weekly departures. Tata-owned Air India will also see a 5.1% increase in international departures with 455 weekly flights.
Vistara (184 flights) and Air India Express (371 flights) will observe a 50.8% and 20% increase in their international weekly departures, respectively.
With a reduction of 12% in its international flights, SpiceJet will witness 174 take-offs in comparison to 199 take-offs in the Summer Schedule 2023.
