In another move to boost electric mobility, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification proposing exemption of registration fees for electric vehicles.
The ministry has invited stakeholder comments to the draft notification to amend Rule 81 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules to exempt battery-operated vehicles from the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark.
The development comes at a time when various government agencies are pushing for widespread adoption of electric mobility.
CNBC-TV18 exclusively reported earlier this month that the government had started preparing a draft notification proposing sales of only electric three-wheelers from April 2023 and only electric two-wheelers under 150cc category from April 2025.
The Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said at the time that the government will consult all stakeholders before making any decision and while there is no move to shut any industry, companies should bring changes with time in view of national interest.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and other stakeholders have been called by NITI Aayog for a key meeting on Friday to discuss the path ahead for electric mobility.
