Monsoon Session Highlights: On the fifth day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, BJP MP Ravi Kishan introduced a private members' bill on population control in the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha is adjourned till Monday after it passed the Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022 amid a chorus of protests by the Opposition. The Rajya Sabha has also been adjourned till 2pm on Monday so the members can attend the swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect Droupadi Murmu earlier in the day. The National Democratic Alliance candidate Droupadi Murmu was elected as the 15th President. She will take oath on July 25, a day after incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind's tenure ends. She defeated Opposition nominee Yashwant by a huge margin, to become the first tribal to hold the post.

In touch with China: Govt on return of students

India and China are in touch with each other to work out the modalities for facilitating the return of Indian medical students to that country, the government informed the Parliament on Friday. Thousands of Indian students are unable to return to China for over two years due to Beijing's COVID-19 restrictions. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said the Centre has been taking up the matter of return of the Indian students with the Chinese authorities. Muraleedharan said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised the issue with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during their meetings on March 25 as well as on July 7.

Data of students going abroad to pursue MBBS not maintained centrally, says govt

The data of students going abroad to pursue MBBS is not maintained centrally, the government informed the Parliament on Friday. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar said a student who has acquired foreign medical qualification from a medical institute abroad is required to qualify in the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) before applying for registration to practise medicine in India."The result of the NEET shall deem to be treated as the eligibility certificate for such persons and no separate permission is required from the NMC (National Medical Commission). Therefore, data of students going abroad to pursue MBBS is not maintained centrally," the minister said.

India supplied 23.9 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses to 101 countries, UN entities

India has supplied 23.9 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine to 101 countries and UN entities in the form of grant, commercial export, or through COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) as on July 15, 2022, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday. Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar also said as on July 19, 2022, a total of 200.34 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to beneficiaries above 12 years of age in the country.

1,456 seats remained vacant from NEET-PG 2021 despite 5 rounds of counselling

As many as 1,456 seats for the NEET-PG 2021 remained vacant despite five rounds of counselling including a special round, the government told the Lok Sabha on Friday. The vacant seats in respect of deemed universities were reverted to respective universities, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar said in a written reply. Pawar was responding to a question on whether the seats had remained vacant even after exhausting all the permissible rounds of counselling.  "The MCC conducted five rounds of counselling for PG seats for the academic year 2021 including a Special Round of counselling. 1456 seats remained vacant.The vacant seats in respect of Deemed universities were reverted back to respective universities," she stated.

23 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts created so far 

Almost 23 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) numbers, which are 14-digit health IDs, have been created, so far, with Andhra Pradesh generating the highest 3.21 crore followed by Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the Lok Sabha was told on Friday. In a written reply to a question, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar said ABHA numbers can be generated for citizens of all age groups with a know your customer (KYC) verification. The ABHA number is a 14-digit ID that allows users to save their health records and medical investigations online. The data can be accessed and shared online by healthcare providers across the country.

Wheat stocks likely to be 80% higher than buffer requirement by April 1 next year, says govt

The government on Friday said wheat stocks in the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns is expected to be 134 lakh tonnes at the start of the next fiscal, 80 percent more than the buffer norm. In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said the central pool stock of wheat as on July 1, 2022 is well above the foodgrains stocking norms. "As on July 1, 2022, the FCI and state government agencies have 285.10 lakh tonnes of wheat stock under central pool against the stocking norm of 275.80 lakh tonnes," he said. In the current 2022-23 marketing year, Goyal said the procurement of wheat has been about 188 lakh tonnes.

Govt orders partial closure of certain offices due to new President's swearing-in ceremony on Monday

The Personnel Ministry on Friday directed partial closure of certain government offices due to swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Droupadi Murmu on Monday. The construction work of new Parliament building also needs to be kept stopped during the time of ceremony, it said. The swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect of India will be held in the Central Hall of the Parliament House on July 25, said the order issued to all Central government departments/ministries. A total of 30 offices are required to be vacated by 6am on July 25, for carrying out anti-sabotage check, according to the order. This exercise will continue till the ceremony is over, it said.

Over 28,000 Indian applicants waiting to adopt a child in the country: Govt 

As many as 28,663 Indian applicants are waiting to adopt a child in the country, the Women and Child Development ministry said on Friday, and noted that number of adoptions are not declining. Responding to a question in Lok Sabha, Women and Child Development minister Smriti Irani on Friday said 1,030 foreign applicants (including Non-Resident Indians and Overseas Citizen of India) are registered with the Central Adoption Resource Authority for adoption. Asked if the adoptions under CARA are declining, she said "no". In 2021-22, as many as 2,991 in-country adoptions were recorded while 414 inter-country adoptions occurred, the minister said. As many as 28,663 Indian applicants are waiting to adopt a child in the country, according to data shared by Irani in response to a question.

40 million eligible beneficiaries haven't taken even single dose of COVID-19 vaccine as on July 18, says govt


An estimated 4 crore eligible beneficiaries have not taken even a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine as of July 18, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Lok Sabha on Friday. A total of 1,78,38,52,566 vaccine doses (97.34 percent) have been administered free of cost in Government Covid Vaccination Centres (CVCs) till July 18, she said in a written reply. "As on 18th July, an estimated 4 crore eligible beneficiaries have not taken even a single dose of Covid vaccine," she said in response to a question on the number and percentage of people who have not taken even a single dose.

All major ports to be made self-sustainable on electricity by 2030: Govt

The government is committed to reducing emissions from the shipping sector and all the major ports will be made fully self-sustainable on electricity by 2030, Parliament was informed on Friday. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said that to develop global standard ports in India, Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 has identified initiatives, such as developing world-class Mega Ports, transshipment hubs and infrastructure modernisation of ports. According to the minister, as a part of Sagarmala Programme, more than 800 projects at an estimated cost of around Rs 5.5 lakh crore have been identified for implementation from 2015 to 2035 across all coastal states. Further, he said under holistic development of coastal districts, a total of 567 projects with an estimated cost of around Rs 58,000 crore have been identified. MIV 2030 estimates the investments to the tune of Rs 1,00,000-1,25,000 crore for capacity augmentation and development of world-class infrastructure at the lndian Ports, he added.

Over 2000 trains cancelled during Agnipath protests between June 15 & June 23: Railway Minister

More than 2000 trains were affected due to the Agnipath protests across the country, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Parliament on Friday. In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, he said 2132 trains were cancelled between June 15 and June 23. Vaishnaw also said that separate data regarding the amount of refund granted to passengers due to disruption of rail services on account of public disorder consequent to agitations like those held after the launching of Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the armed forces is not maintained. "However, during the period 14.06.2022 to 30.06.2022, a total refund of approximately Rs 102.96 crore was granted on account of cancellation of trains and a loss of Rs 259.44 crore due to damage/destruction of railway assets in agitations against Agnipath scheme was incurred. All the affected train services cancelled on account of Agnipath scheme have been restored," he said.
