Assam flood in pictures: Third wave submerges 92% of Kaziranga National Park

SUMMARY

The floods in Assam this year have claimed 92 lives till July 23. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 28.32 lakh people have been affected across 26 districts. A total of 2,634 villages under 74 revenue circles have been swamped by the swollen river Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Over 47,000 people are taking shelter in 286 relief camps and 1.19 Hectares of crop area has been damaged. In 12 districts, 170 relief distribution centers have also been opened. Goalpara, Barpeta, Morigaon, Dhubri, South Salmara, Golaghat, Nagaon are some of the worst-affected districts. Rescue agencies including NDRF and SDRF have evacuated  at least 1,100 people from submerged areas in the past 24 hours. 92 percent of Kaziranga National Park has been inundated in the third wave of floods and 123 animals have been killed including 9 rhinos. 17 hog deer also have been killed by speeding vehicles along the national highway despite authorities issuing speed advisory. 150 animals including a month old rhino calf have been rescued by forest authorities and the WTI-Centre for Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation with help of locals.
